In February 2021, I was starting to feel a little stir crazy from the pandemic and decided to go on a solo road trip throughout the southwest. I packed up my car and hit the road with my trusty 4 legged companion, Carmen. We traveled down through Colorado and over into Arizona where we hit Petrified Forest National Park, Flagstaff, and Sedona. I have always dreamed of taking my own reference photos and I really wanted to paint a landscape with a Saguaro cactus in the foreground. On the trip I learned that the kind of cactus I was looking for only grew between sea level and 4,000ft elevation, so we headed south. I pulled over a bunch of times whenever I started seeing the Saguaros popping up, but couldn’t quite find the photo I was looking for. Eventually I found myself at Saguaro National Park with an overwhelming amount of options to choose from! That is where I took the photo for this painting.

We continued to travel east to White Sands National Park in New Mexico and then back up north to Denver. I returned home feeling exhausted but creatively energized in a way that travel often makes me feel.
